A Florence Fairytale

I have never dreamed of the perfect wedding or of being a bride, but after experiencing Tuscany, I can’t even imagine a more romantic place to say I DO. Our trip to Italy was off to a great start when we were upgraded to first class with points from my credit card. After a comfortable flight from DC, we landed at Fiumicino Airport in Rome. We hopped in our rental car (a wonderful way to explore the country at your own pace) and were making great time to Florence. We checked into the absolutely stunning St. Regis hotel (read about how I use points!) and were blown away by the architecture and ceiling murals that date back to 1432. You really can’t go wrong with booking a room here, however I would recommend one of the beautiful suites with expansive patios that provide sweeping views of the Arno river which runs through the Tuscan region of Italy. The suite offers a comfy king bed that is perfect for sleeping off jet lag.

After 2 hours of napping, my boyfriend woke me up and told me to throw on a dress because we were going on a horse drawn carriage tour of the city. If you are from New York, this is no new concept, but for Florence locals, this was quite a scene. The rain that morning was exceptionally heavy and I was a little taken aback that my boyfriend suggested a dress. The wheels started to spin and I caught on that maybe he was going to propose. Good thing I had my nails done the day before our flight, just in case. I normally am pretty quick out the door, but that day, I spent a little extra time on my hair and make up.

The St. Regis staff was kind enough to equip us with plenty of umbrellas to keep us covered and extra towels to sit on, since it was an uncovered horse carriage. Fortunately the rain calmed down and the sun started to make an appearance. By the time we made it to the Garden of Roses (a must see when in Florence), there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and it turned out to be a perfectly clear afternoon providing us with panoramic views of Florence. A butler awaited us holding a bottle of champagne on ice and chocolate covered strawberries (I would absolutely do a picnic here!) I was so nervous and excited I couldn’t even take a clear picture. It turns out the “butler” was an opera singer and began to serenade us. To say this was a dream come true would be an understatement, because not in a million years, would I ever dream of something so well thought out, romantic and loving. Of course I said yes and I’m already planning my honeymoon in Italy.

The day lead to a beautifully planned evening at the Belmond Villa San Michele, where reservations are highly coveted and made months in advance (so start planning!) The Belmond Villa San Michele is an upscale hotel that sits on a hilltop with unparalleled views of the city. The gardens are breathtaking and the service is exceptional. We shared a Steak Florentine (a must have while in Florence) and a Vintage bottle of Brunello Di Montalcino (Casanova Di Neri, 1999). The day was flawless.
